The Censored Newsvendor and the Optimal Acquisition of Information

چکیده
This paper investigates the e ect of demand censoring on the optimal policy in newsvendor inventory models with general parametric demand distributions and unknown parameter values. We show that the newsvendor problem with observable lost sales reduces to a sequence of single-period problems while the newsvendor problem with unobservable lost sales requires a dynamic analysis. Using a Bayesian Markov decision process approach we show that the optimal inventory level in the presence of partially observable demand is higher than when demand is completely observed. We explore the economic rationality for this observation and illustrate it with numerical examples.

Technical Note - A Note on "The Censored Newsvendor and the Optimal Acquisition of Information"
This paper revisits the finite-horizon model of a censored newsvendor by Ding, Puterman and Bisi (2002). An important result claimed there without a proper proof is that the myopic order quantity is always less than or equal to the optimal order quantity. Lu, Song and Zhu (2005b) has supplied a correct proof of the result. We analyze the same model using the interesting concept of the unnormali...
متن کاملRisk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility
Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...
متن کاملThe Censored Newsvendor Problem with Newsvendor Demand Distributions
We study the dynamic newsvendor problem with censored demand for both perishable and storable inventory models. We focus on the cases when demand is represented by a member of the newsvendor family of distributions. We show that the Weibull density is the only member of newsvendor distributions for which the optimal solution can be expressed in scalable form. Consequently, scalability yields su...
متن کاملDynamic Learning, Pricing, and Ordering by a Censored Newsvendor
We address the problem of determining optimal ordering and pricing policies in a finite-horizon newsvendor model with unobservable lost sales. The demand distribution is price-dependent and involves unknown parameters. We consider both the cases of perishable and non-perishable inventory. A very general class of demand functions is studied in this paper. We derive the optimal ordering and prici...
متن کاملAn Adaptive, Distribution-Free Algorithm for the Newsvendor Problem with Censored Demands, with Applications to Inventory and Distribution
We consider the problem of optimizing inventories for problems where the demand distribution is unknown, and where it does not necessarily follow a standard form such as the normal. We address problems where the process of deciding the inventory, and then realizing the demand, occurs repeatedly. The only information we use is the amount of inventory left over. Rather than attempting to estimate...
